Planning your week, April 25-May 1

Regular season play continues in some conferences and ends in some others while conference tournaments begin in three leagues this week.

Clemson and South Carolina take the midweek off for exams, but host conference and division rivals from Florida in series with possible long-lasting implications.

* Erskine has a rare split doubleheader at two locations on Monday. The Flying Fleet, which wrapped up the Conference Carolinas regular-season title with a doubleheader sweep of North Greenville on Saturday, complete the NGU series at 2:30 Monday in Due West, then head up to Anderson to face Anderson. That game has been pushed back an hour from its original 6 p.m. starting time to accommodate Erskine's travel plans to cover the 20 miles or so between the stadiums.

The Flying Fleet are the top seed for the Conference Carolinas Tournament beginning Thursday in Burlington, N.C. North Greenville will be the second seed if it wins Monday's game, but will be the third seed behind Belmont Abbey if it loses.

* Coker and Newberry qualified for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament beginning Thursday in Kodak, Tenn., but they must survive the play-in round to advance to the main draw. The Cobras will play Wingate, while the Wolves will play Lenoir-Rhyne.

* Claflin will play in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament beginning Thursday in Ozark, Ala. Benedict is hoping for a favorable ruling from the league in an effort to earn a berth because of some possible forfeits.

* There are two in-state matchups on Tuesday: Presbyterian is at Furman and Wofford meets Charleston Southern in Lexington.

* Coastal Carolina takes a break from Big South Conference play next weekend for a three-game series at Georgia Tech.

* Furman and The Citadel are compacting their SoCon weekend series into two days: a Saturday doubleheader and a single game on Sunday.

* Lander has completed its Peach Belt Conference schedule, but could win the regular-season title if Columbus State doesn't win two games in its series with UNC Pembroke.

* NJCAA Region 10 teams concluded their league schedule on Sunday, but there are some additional regular-season games prior to the conference tournament next month. USC Salkehatchie visits USC Sumter and Florence-Darlington Tech is at USC Lancaster on Saturday for single games that don't count in the region standings.

* Clemson must do well in its weekend home series (Saturday through Monday) with Florida State to have a longshot chance at finishing in the top half of the ACC Atlantic Division.  The Tigers are in sixth place, six games behind FSU and just one game ahead of last-place Boston College.

* South Carolina has a one-game lead over Florida entering its weekend home series with the Gators. The Gamecocks need one win to be assured of being tied for first in the SEC East after the weekend. Two or three wins would allow the Gamecocks to pad their lead with three weekends of league play remaining.

* College of Charleston is tied for third, three games behind leader UNC Wilmington, at the midpoint of its Colonial Athletic Association schedule. The Cougars head to Towson next weekend with almost no margin for error it it wants to win the regular-season title.
