Shaffer wins HR Derby; Palka shares second
Clemson's Richie Shaffer won the Home Run Derby in conjunction with the Cape Cod League's All-Star Game Friday night. Georgia Tech's Daniel Palka, from Greer, finished in a tie for second.

  • Golf even benefits Ray Tanner Foundation
    TheBigSpur.com, a USC fan site, had a golf tournament Saturday and raised more than $4,000 for the Ray Tanner Foundation, which helps the needy in the Midlands.

    Meanwhile, Tanner has been named the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce's 2011 ambassador of the year and will be honored at a Sept. 22 event.

  • Wingo, Taylor prospering
    Former USC and Mauldin High star Scott Wingo was hitting .450 through his first nine games with the Dodgers' Arizona League team. Former Gamecocks reliever John Taylor had 9 strikeouts, a 3-0 record and a save in 5.2 innings for Pulaski of the Mariners farm system. He has allowed two hits and walked none. Ex-Gamecocks Adrian Morales was hitting .400 in 30 at-bats for the Arizona League's Royals through Friday. He hit his first career home run on Thursday.
