Voorhees cancels season
Voorhees College officials have informed me the school will not field a baseball team in 2012. That leaves Claflin and Benedict as the only Historically Black College and University schools to field baseball programs.

Koumas on watch list
South Carolina pitcher Forrest Koumas, who is expected to replace Matt Price as closer for the two-time defending national champions, is the only player from a state school on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's preseason watch list for Stopper of the Year.

Patriots favored
Francis Marion is the coaches' preseason choice to win the Peach Belt Conference championship. USC Aiken is picked seventh and Lander eighth.

DII players honored
Several players from state schools have been named preseason all-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Francis Marion's Don Sandifer and USC Aiken's Nick Aranas were first-team selections and Francis Marion;'s Buddy Sosnoskie was a second-team choice.

Sandifer, Aranas and Sosnoskie were first-team all-Southeast Region. Second-team choices included Drew Provence of North Greenville, Cameron Culp of Limestone, Josh Miller of USC Aiken and Michael Wilson of Francis Marion. Third-team selections included Stephen Carmon of USC Aiken and Markus Duckworth and Adam Taylor of North Greenville.
