Williams reportedly not on USC roster

Outfielder Jake Williams, who started 58 games and played in 62 for South Carolina last season, will not make the active roster for the 2012 season, according to The State, GamecockCentral.com and BigSpur247.com.

Williams, from Riverside High in Greer, transferred from Wofford after two seasons and sat out the 2010 season. He hit .268 last season and made a memorable throw from the outfield in the College World Series to cut down a potential tying run by Florida in the championship series.

He also hit the game-winning home run in the Gamecocks win over Clemson at Fluor Field in March.

He missed part of preseason practice for what were termed personal issues, and those issues are believed to be a factor in his decision.

Williams was expected to be a contender for the designated hitter spot and provide spot outfield relief for Tanner English, Evan Marzilli and Adam Matthews.

The official 34-player roster is expected to be revealed Thursday during a media availability with USC coach Ray Tanner.  It must be revealed prior to Friday's 3 p.m. series opener againt VMI.

The Gamecocks are one below the NCAA limit of 35 because Mikail Hill transferred after the fall semester and that position cannot be replaced.
