State players headed to Cape Cod League (revised)

At least 11 players with state connections are headed to the Cape Cod League in 2013 to play for that venerable wood bat summer league.

The biggest concentration is with the Cotuit (Mass.) Kettleers, where eight players from state schools are on the roster.

One of the eight is Elliott Caldwell, a former Wren High star now playing for Spartanburg Methodist. Caldwell, who transferred from Winthrop to SMC, set a Prospect League record for hits last summer and parlayed that strong season into a scholarship offer from South Carolina.

Others include Clemson pitcher Kevin Bradley, Coastal Carolina pitcher Patrick Corbett, USC catcher Grayson Greiner, USC pitcher Jordan Montgomery, USC infielder Joey Pankake, USC infielder Max Schrock and Coastal Carolina pitcher Ben Smith.

In addition, Spartanburg native Hunter Cole of the University of Georgia is on the roster. The team is coached by Mike Roberts, former coach at North Carolina and father of former Gamecock Baltimore Oriole Brian Roberts.

Tanner English of USC and Gunnar Heidt of College of Charleston are on the Harwich (Mass. ) Mariners' roster.

Several leagues have not published their rosters yet. A family member reports Furman pitcher Elliott Warford also is headed for the Cape.
