NEWS DIGEST, DEC. 11

USC 17th; Clemson 21st
South Carolina is ranked 17th and Clemson 21st in PerfectGame.org's early recruiting rankings for the 2014 signing class. North Carolina is  ranked No. 1. RHP Grant Holmes of Conway helped Florida earn a No. 3 ranking. Click on individual schools for a list of signees.

Earlier, the Website gave Florida the No. 1 ranking among 2013 signing classes. USC was No. 3 and  Clemson No. 20.

Furman has announced the signing of 10 players during the fall early signing period. All of the signees are from out of state.

Furman coach Ron Smith (shown above) has been selected for induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Smith was a two-sport standout in high school and at Furman.

Hose sign 10
Presbyterian College has announced the signing of 10 players for its 2014-15 recruiting class. Included are two South Carolinians: P/C/IF Tanner Chock of Loris and RHP Russell Thompson of Laurence Manning.

Coker signs six
Coker has announced six signees for the 2014-15 recruiting class. Three South Carolinians - RHP Joey Carpenter of Wren, 2B/SS Bryson Conner of North Augusta and P Zack Bennett of Woodmont - are in the group.

Patriots sign six
Francis Marion has announced the addition of six players during the early signing period. They include SS Trevor Bradley from West Columbia and USC Sumter, 3B Cody Smiley of Laurens and  IF/OF Brandon Young of Aynor.

PC reveals schedule
Presbyterian has announced its 2014 schedule.

Southern Wesleyan's baseball players are collecting toys for the Country Santa project in the Pickens County area. The organization distributes toys to underprivileged children.

Former Benedict standout Brandon Young has signed a contract with the Trinidad (Colo.) Triggers, a team in the independent Pecos League. Young is the son of Benedict coach Selwyn Young.

USC Aiken's baseball program will receive the proceeds of a bull riding event set for Jan. 14 in Augusta.

Coastal offers voucher package
Coastal Carolina is offering a $50 voucher package for 12 home games - other than the Baseball at the Beach Tournament - in 2014. The Chanticleers will play a TicketReturn.com Field in Myrtle Beach as work continues on an on-campus facility.

Clemson is offering birthday party packages for the 2014 season for fans ages 12 and under.

National notes
* Baseball is one of seven sports being eliminated by Temple after the 2014 school year.

* Southeastern Louisiana will operate at 10.7 scholarships (the NCAA limit if 11.7) the next two seasons as a result of NCAA penalties imposed because of a lack of institutional control. An NCAA investigation found the school allowed 137 athletes over five years  to compete despite being academically ineligible. Football and men's and women's basketball also suffered penalties.

* Brian Murphy has been promoted to head coach at William & Mary, one of College of Charleston's rivals in the Colonial Athletic Association. He replaced Jamie Pinzino, who left to become pitching coach at Oklahoma.

* The town of Cary, N.C., has been awarded an additional three years of being host of the NCAA Division II College World Series. The agreement extends the event's tenure there through 2018. Cary and Mount Olive College have co-hosted the event the last five years and the 2014 and 2015 events had previously been awarded to the site.
