2014 TEAM PREVIEW: SOUTHERN WESLEYAN

Palmetto State Baseball: After what you saw in fall workouts, what are your team's prospects for the 2014 season?

Southern Wesleyan coach Mike Gillespie: We had a productive fall season. In our last season in the NAIA we will look to finish strong and get back to where we were in the SSAC during the 2000's.

PSB: What are your biggest areas of concern entering the 2014 season?

MG: Starting pitching will be our biggest concern. We have several guys competing for the weekend rotation but we are still looking for consistency.  On any given day we have 4-5 guys that could step in and compete on the weekend, once we find that consistency weekend in and out then we should see some success.

PSB: In what areas does your team appear to be improved from the 2013 season?

MG: Our bullpen depth is much improved and our batting order is much stronger 3-6, allowing us to feel confident entering games this spring and expecting to score some runs.

PSB: Based on fall workouts, which returnees from 2013 (including redshirts) look best prepared to play a bigger role in 2014?

MG: We have several upperclassmen returners that had a good fall. Seniors Stephen Wyatt and Tyler Lollis had solid fall season. Lollis redshirted last year due to an ACL injury and has been an SSAC all- conference selection as a sophomore. Both players figure to hit in middle of lineup. Junior Mike Hyman is coming off a sophomore all-conference selection. On the mound senior Matt Craig is coming off a great junior season, defeating several top 25 teams in 2013.

PSB: Based on fall workouts, which newcomers are most likely to contend for major roles in 2014?

MG: Seniors Tyler Bice and Joe Henderson are both newcomers and had good fall campaigns. Bice is the prototypical two hole hitter and can play anywhere on the field but will most likely anchor the SS position. Henderson provides some pop in the middle of the lineup. Junior Matt Buss should figure in on the weekend rotation as well.

NEXT: TBA. I don't have any more responses.
