Jake Wright went 3-for-4 with a home run and Zach McCambley struck out 10 in five innings as Coastal Carolina opened the home portion of its Sun Belt Conference schedule with a 4-2 win over Troy Friday night.
Wright, originally in the lineup because of an injury to Parker Chavers, has gone 12-for-18 over the last five games with 2 doubles, a triple, 3 homers, 8 runs scored and 14 RBIs. He homered in the first inning Friday for Coastal (17-4-1, 4-0).
McCambley allowed three hits over five shutout innings.
Troy (10-12, 0-4) loaded the bases in the ninth before Alaska Abney got the final out on a strikeout.
Elsewhere:
* Davis Sharpe pitched seven shutout innings for Clemson (17-5, 5-2) as the Tigers beat Boston College, 8-1, in their first game outside South Carolina this season.
James Parker, in his second start, had a two-run double in a three-run second inning. Clemson added four runs in the eighth and BC (10-11, 2-5) avoided a shutout with a run in the ninth.
* College of Charleston (14-8) scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to clip Elon, 3-1, to open Colonial Athletic Association play. Dupree Hart scored the go-ahead run on an error and Danny Wondrack singled in an insurance run later in the inning. The College's Griffin McLarty struck out nine in seven innings.
* Winthrop (12-9, 4-0) scored three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to pull away to a 12-4 win at Longwood in Big South Conference play. Zach Peek struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings and Matthew Mulkey drove in four runs for the Eagles, who have won six straight games.
* Presbyterian (10-13, 3-1) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to trip up Gardner-Webb, 6-5, in the opener of their Big South Conference series. The Blue Hose fell behind 5-0 in the third inning, but Eric Miles hung around to pitch a 10-strikeout complete game. Andrew Livingston's pinch-hit single capped the ninth-inning uprising.
* South Carolina (15-7, 0-4) remained winless in SEC play with a 15-5 loss at Tennessee. The Gamecocks struggled on the mound and in the field and missed several opportunities for big innings before the Volunteers (19-4, 1-3) pulled away.
* North Greenville (25-7, 11-2) extended its winning streak to 12 games with a 7-5 win at Emmanuel in the opener of a Conference Carolinas series. Jeff Chandler, Utah Jones and Adam Sasser had two hits apiece for the Crusaders. Chandler, Sasser and Jeremy Whitehead hit solo homers.
* Corey Everett and Cole Warken homered in the first inning and Erskine (14-14, 5-6) held on to beat Limestone and end a four-game losing streak. Matt Hilderbrant and Ryan Creps homered for the Saints (7-21, 4-9).
* Lander (10-18, 6-7) had nine hits and benefited from 20 walks in an 18-3 rout of Francis Marion (18-10, 9-7) to open a Peach Belt Conference series.
* Newberry (25-7, 9-1) cracked double digits in scoring for the 14th time this season in a 20-1 rout of Anderson (11-17, 2-8) in South Atlantic Conference play. Danton Hyman had three hits and drove in four runs for the Wolves, who are 17-0 at the Smith Road Complex this season.
* Three Florida A&M pitchers combined to limit Wofford (16-8) to five hits and an unearned run in a 2-1 victory in the opener of a nonconference series in Tallahassee.
* Anthony Mulrine and Kaden Dreier had two-run homers in the first inning and Samford (15-6) coasted to an 8-4 win over Furman (5-14) in the Southern Conference opener for both teams. The Paladins got three straight one-out hits to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before the Bulldogs responded with the big bottom half of the frame. Jabari Richards and John Michael Boswell had two hits each for Furman.
* Radford (8-13 2-2) pushed across a run in the 11th inning for a 6-5 win at Charleston Southern (8-16, 0-4) in the opener of a Big South Conference series. Each team scored three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. Jason Miller opened the Buccaneers' 11th with his third hit of the game, but then got picked off.
* The Citadel (7-15) dropped its Southern Conference opener against VMI, 9-5, in Charleston as its losing streak reached seven games. Ryan McCarthy had two of the Bulldogs' seven hits.
* High Point scored a run in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and added two in the eighth for a 4-2 win at USC Upstate (10-12, 1-3) in Big South Conference play. The Spartans were limited to five hits, but struck out 12 times and committed five errors.
* A 10-run eighth lifted Belmont Abbey (13-18, 5-9) to a 13-4 win over Southern Wesleyan (12-16, 4-8) in a Conference Carolinas series opener. Conner Ewing, Bryson Fowler and Jarred Jones had two hits apiece for the Warriors.
* Catawba (25-7, 10-3) scored seven runs in the ninth inning and took the SAC series opener at Coker (11-15-1, 5-8) by a 13-12 score. The Indians scored a run in the first, but Coker went up 5-1 after four. Catawba was leading 7-5 until the Cobras scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth. Grant Thompson had three hits and drove in three runs for Coker.
