Furman (went 5-0)
(won at Winthrop; won at Gardner-Webb; went 3-0 vs. The Citadel)
Furman got as many wins this week as it did the first six-plus weeks of the season.
There was no secret to the success. Coach Brett Harker's Paladins have been getting timely hitting and better pitching. Furman scored 64 runs (12.8 per game) during its five wins, compared to 92 runs (4.4 per game) during its first 21 games of the season.
The Paladins' win against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday included a triple play and Jabari Richards hitting a grand slam as part of hitting for the cycle.
The only close game of the week was Friday's 5-4 walk-off win over The Citadel, courtesy of Dax Roper's home run. Even that game was unusual. The Citadel got a base hit on a pitch where a balk was called and chose to accept the hit. Later in the inning, an interference call negated a wild throw that appeared to let the go-ahead run score. Instead, the runner was sent back and the Paladins got out of the inning.
The Paladins play host to Winthrop on Tuesday. The Paladins ended a seven-game losing streak and an eight-game Winthrop winning streak in Rock Hill last Tuesday. The Eagles have lost all three games since.
