Saturday's S.C. college baseball roundup, March 30

Reid Morgan and Brett Kerry combined on a shutout and South Carolina (17-10, 2-6) took advantage of Auburn's wildness on the mound for a 4-0 victory at Founders Park Saturday to even the SEC series at 1-1.

Ian Jenkins homered in the second inning to stake Carolina to a 1-0 lead. The Gamecocks loaded the bases on walks in the sixth and all three runners eventually scored, two of them on an the third error of the series by an Auburn pitcher throwing to first base .

Carolina was outhit 6-4, but Morgan surrendered only one walk and kept the Tigers (21-6, 5-3) in check over the first seven innings. Kerry came in after Morgan allowed a leadoff single in the eighth and completed the shutout.

George Callil singled and doubled for USC, which goes for its first SEC series win of the season at noon Sunday.

Elsewhere:
* Logan McRae's 10th-inning home run produced a 7-4 walk-off victory in the opener and College of Charleston (19-10, 4-2) completed a doubleheader and CAA home series sweep of Hofstra (3-18, 0-3) with
a 16-0 romp in Game 2.  The Cougars trailed 4-0 after 5 1/2 innings on the opener before rallying. Bradley Dixon singled twice, doubled twice and drove in five runs for the College in Game 2, when it scored five runs in the first and was never threatened.

* Clemson (21-6, 8-3) parlayed 13 hits, 11 walks and 3 hit batsmwn into a 14-1 romp over Virginia Tech (16-11, 4-7)  to clinch an ACC road series victory for the second straight weekend. Bryce Teodosio homered and drove in four runs and Bo Majkowski and Davis Sharpe drove in three apiece for the Tigers, who put the game away with a seven-run sixth. Mat Clark and two relievers combined to hold the Hokies to five hits while striking out 10.

* Furman (9-16, 2-3) totaled 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to smack The Citadel, 20-6, and clinch a SoCon series victory. Ben Peden gave the Bulldogs (9-18, 2-3) a two-run lead with a first-inning home run, but two unearned runs helped the Paladins go up 3-2 after two innings. Leading 4-3, the Paladins erupted for eight runs in the fifth and sixth in the to take a 15-run lead as comfortable as one of the Latham Stadium rocking chairs. David Webel had three hits and five teammates added two apiece for the Paladins. Furman has scored 57 runs in its current four-game winning streak after totaling 20 (seven in one game) during the preceding seven-game losing streak.

* Wofford (19-10, 2-0) scored four runs in the second and seventh innings and three more in the eighth to coast past Mercer, 11-2, and secure a SoCon series victory. Matty Brown and Colin Davis had three hits apiece and Hayes Heinecke improved to 6-0 by pitching the first seven innings.

* Charleston Southern (10-20, 1-7) scored five unearned runs in a 6-5 win at High Point (10-14, 3-5) to even that Big South Conference series and get its first conference win of the season.

* Gary Gilmore got his 1,200th win as a college head coach when Coastal Carolina beat Arkansas State, 6-0, in the opener of their Sun Belt Conference doubleheader. Austin Kitchen struck out nine and allowed four hits over the first seven innings. The Chanticleers (20-8-1, 6-3) dropped the series when Arkansas State (19-9, 7-2)  won Game 2, 7-3. Gilmore was at USC Aiken before moving to Conway.

* Winthrop (14-12, 6-2) sufered its third straight loss and fell out of first place in the Big South with a 20-11 loss at Radford. The Highlanders scored six runs in the third to wipe out a 5-3 deficit and another six in the eighth after Winthrop had pulled within 14-11.

* North Greenville (27-7. 13-3) stretched its lead in Conference Carolinas to 3 1/2 games with a 9-3, 15-1 sweep of Southern Wesleyan (12-22, 4-3). Barton (23-14, 11-7) split two games at Limestone to fall into third place behind Mount Olive (22-9, 11-6), which swept Emmanuel.

* Newberry (31-7, 14-1)  won two at Wingate, 10-8 and 8-3, to push its winning streak to 12 games. The Wolves remained a half-game ahead of Catawba (30-8, 15-3) in the South Atlantic Conference standings.

* Erskine (19-16, 9-7) swept a Conference Carolinas home doubleheader with Chowan (11-15-1, 7-10), using a 10-run sixth win the opener, 11-1, and coasting to a 21-7 win in the nightcap.

* Eric McElveen homered in both games as Claflin (16-10) outslugged Morehouse, 12-9 and 11-5. McElveen was 5-for-6 with a double, a triple, a walk, 2 homers, 4 runs scored and 8 RBIs on the day.

*  Spartanburg Methodist (18-12, 7-1) remained in first place in NJCAA Region 10 with wins of 11-3 and 9-2 at USC Salkehatchie (10-28, 1-13). Jordan Jackson pitched a complete game for the Pioneers in the opener, while Rome Wallace had four hits and drove in two runs in support of Nate Lamb's complete game in the nightcap.

* Jonny Watts homered in each game as USC Lancaster (24-6, 10-4) moved into a virtual three-way tie for first place in Region 10 with wins of 6-4 and 6-1 over USC Sumter, (17-17, 5-5).

* Eamonn Collins pitched a no-hitter in the opener as USC Beaufort (16-22) wrapped up a three-game nonconference sweep at Trinity Baptist with wins of 6-0 and 8-1.
