Wrapping up the weekend in S.C. college baseball, March 31

Clemson's early seven-run lead was cut to one before a five-run seventh put the Tigers (21-6, 9-3) back in control in a 12-9 win at Virginia Tech on Sunday to complete an ACC series sweep.

Bryce Teodosio's three-run homer capped Clemson's six-run first inning.  After the Hokies cut the deficit to 7-6, an errant throw with the bases loaded allowed three runs to score in Clemson's seventh-inning uprising.

Teodosio and three teammates had two hits apiece.

The Tigers gained a game on Atlantic Division leader N.C. State on the weekend and share second place with Louisville, which visits Doug Kingsmore Stadium next weekend. The Tigers and Cardinals are a game back of the Wolfpack.

Elsewhere:
* Furman (10-16, 3-3) used its weekend sweep of The Citadel (9-19, 2-4) to even its record in Southern Conference action. The Paladins hit .349 for the series. Jabari Richards, who was 8-for-10 in a pair of midweek games, was 2-for-6 against the Bulldogs before leaving Saturday's game in the fifth inning because of an injury suffered while playing defense. He did not play in the series finale. He was sidelined for several weeks earlier in the season because of a wrist injury suffered the opening weekend. He was hitting .462 before that injury and is still hitting .431.

* South Carolina's offense showed some signs of life, but the lack of a settled weekend pitching rotation bit the Gamecocks (17-11, 2-7)  against as they lost the rubber game of an SEC series with Auburn, 7-5. Carolina loaded the bases and scored a run with one out in the bottom of the first, but couldn't deliver a knockout punch. That failure proved costly when Auburn hit two home runs in a six-run second inning.  Ian Jenkins and George Callil homered for Carolina, which got the potential tying run on base with none out in the ninth, but was unable to move them over. Callil had three hits for USC, which got 11 hits to crack double figures for the first time in six games. Things get no easier for USC, with a midweek game against N.C. State in Charlotte and a trip to Alabama in the of two straight conference road series.

* Spartanburg Methodist (20-12, 9-1) gained ground on the other six teams in NJCAA Region 10 as the only team to go 4-0 in league play over the weekend. Coach Tim Wallace's Pioneers swept a series at USC Salkehatchie, a last place team playing in the wake of losing teammate Parker Neff, who died at a hospital Friday after collapsing on the field.

* Francis Marion  (20-14, 11-10) scored seven runs in the 11th inning to knock off Peach Belt Conference leader North Georgia, 7-4, to avoid a series sweep. The Nighthawks are ranked ninth in the latest Collegiate Baseball Division II poll.

* Claflin (17-10 broke out the big bats again Sunday to a seven-inning 14-1 win over Morehouse to complete a three-game sweep of its former SIAC rival. Coach James Randall's Tigers scored 37 runs in 21 innings. Seventeen of their 32 hits went for extra bases.

* Lander's 8-6 win at Augusta in the rubber game of that series allowed the Bearcats (14-21, 9-9)  get back to .500 in Peach Belt Conference play.

* Wofford (19-11, 2-1) lost its series finale against Mercer, 4-1, to miss out on a Southern Conference home series sweep.

* After losing four of five games the previous week, College of Charleston (19-10, 4-2) with a sweep of CAA opponent Hofstra to complete a 5-0 week.

* Newberry (31-7, 14-1) and North Greenville (27-7, 15-3) retained first place in the South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas, respectively, with weekend conference series sweeps to finish unbeaten weeks. Newberry is on a 12-game wining. Earlier in the season the Wolves won 13 straight before a 3-3 stretch prior to the current streak.

* Coastal Carolina (20-8-1, 6-3) lost two of three to Arkansas State. but ended the weekend as it began -- a game ahead of Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Conference East Division - because the Eagles lost two of three to Louisiana Monroe.

* Winthrop (14-13, 6-3) fell into a third-place tie with UNC Asheville in the Big South Conference standings as an 0-3 weekend at Radford dropped the Eagles two games behind Campbell and one behind Radford.
