Friday's S.C. college baseball roundup, April 5

Logan Davidson's three-run homer in the fourth inning wiped out a 1-0 deficit and Kyle Wilkie followed with a solo shot as Clemson (23-7, 10-3) opened an ACC home series with Louisville (23-7, 9-4) with a 5-1 victory Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium..

Elijah Henderson also homered for Clemson in support of starter Davis Sharpe (5-1), who went 6 2/3 innings and struck out seven. Holt Jones finished for his third save.

Clemson and Louisville entered the weekend tied for second place in the ACC Atlantic Division standings. With the win the Tigers remained a game behind N.C. State, which beat Boston College.

Elsewhere:
* Griffin McLarty pitched a five-hit complete game as College of Charleston (20-11, 5-2) won the opener of a Colonial Athletic Association series at James Madison (18-13, 2-5), 5-1.  Chaz Davey homered and joined Dupree Hart in getting three hits for the Cougars.

* Eric Miles struck out eight over eight innings and Garrett Jones put  Presbyterian (12-18, 5-5) ahead with a two-run single in the seventh as the Blue Hose snapped a four-game losing streak by wining the opener of a Big South Conference series with UNC Asheville (11-17, 6-4), 4-2.

* Wofford (20-12, 3-1) built a 14-run lead in the top of the third and rolled to a 20-5 win at Western Carolina (12-14. 2-5) in the opener of a Southern Conference series in Cullowhee. The Terriers had 15 hits and drew an equal number of walks. Colin Davis had three hits and joined Brett Rodriguez in driving in three runs apiece. Starter Austin Higginbotham was able to cruise through seven innings, striking out seven.

* Spencer Yankle's two-run homer inh the first inning gave Winthrop (16-13, 7-3)  a lead it never relinquished in a n 8-2 win over High Point (11-16, 4-6) to begin a Big South Conference series in Rock Hill. Scout McFalls had three hits and pitcher Zach Peek stuck out eight as he pitched into the ninth inning.

* Ben Peden had three hits and drove in four runs as The Citadel (10-20, 3-4) was an 8-5 winner over Mercer (13-17, 2-5) in the opener of a SoCon series at Joe Riley Park. Ryan McCarthy also had three hits and Dylan Spence pitched four innings in relief to get the save.

* USC Upstate 14-16, 3-7) scored three runs in the second inning and pitchers Jordan Marks and Will Wheeler combined to keep Radford  (14-15, 7-3) at bay in a 4-3 win in a Big South Conference game.

* South Carolina (18-13, 2-9) continued its SEC struggles with losses of 9-0 and 4-1 at Alabama (22-10, 4-7) in a day-night doubleheader. The Gamecocks were a combined 7-for-60  (.117) on the day, with Jacob Olson's 12th homer of the season the only thing between them and a pair of shutouts. Carolina is batting.187 in SEC games this season.

* Southern Wesleyan (14-22, 5-13) scored a run without a hit in the ninth inning to walk off with a 6-5 win over second-place Mount Olive (23-10, 11-7) to open a Conference Carolinas series in Central. The Warriors scored four runs in the seventh to tie the score at five. In the ninth, Devin Patrick walked, went to second on a wild pitch and took third on D.J. Ludwick's sacrifice bunt. Timo Schau lofted a fly ball to left to score Patrick. Conner Ewing singled and doubled for Southern Wesleyan. The loss dropped Mount Olive to 4 1/2 games behind first-place North Greenville.

* Jeff Chandler singled and homered to drive in four runs and Jeremy Whitehead had three hits and a walk as North Greenville (29-7, 16-3) won its sixth straight game, 4-3, over King (11-20, 6-11) in the opener of a Conference Carolinas road series.

* First-place Newberry (32-8, 15-1) won its 12th straight South Atlantic Conference game with a 4-3 win at Carson-Newman (22-16, 5-10). Danton Hyman had two of the Wolves' six hits. Quinton Driggers pitched the final three innings for his fourth save. Newberry. which scored three unearned runs, moved a game ahead of idle Catawba in the SAC standings.

* Mitch Spence struck out 16 in a three-hit complete game as USC Aiken (19-16, 11-8) rallied for a 2-1 win over Augusta (16-20, 5-17) in a Peach Belt Conference series opener in Aiken. The Jaguars were held to one hit after scoring a run in the first. In the Pacers' fifth, they loaded the bases on two hits and a hit batsman. An error on Trey Polewski's infield grounder allowed both Aiken runs to score. Augusta got two runners on in the ninth on an error and a dropped third strike, but both were stranded.

* Erskine (21-16, 10-7) moved past Barton (23-16, 11-8) into third place in Conference Carolinas with an 8-5 win to open their league series. Cory Everett's sixth-inning single broke a 5-5 tie and lifted the Flying Fleet to their fifth straight win.

* USC Beaufort (19-22, 4-13) had 30 hits in a 9-3,12-2 doubleheader sweep of Sun Conference rival Ave Maria. Robbie McKinney had four hits and drove in six runs in Game 2 as the Sand Sharks pushed their winning streak to six games.
