Wrapping up the weekend, April 7

Clemson (24-8, 11-4) missed out on a chance to be tied for first place in the ACC Atlantic Division at the midpoint of league play when it was unable to complete a sweep of Louisville on Sunday.

Louisville (24-8, 10-5) scored three runs in the 11th inning for a 7-4 victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Cardinals built an early 3-0, lead, but Clemson tied the score on a Logan Davidson home run in the third and took a 4-3 lead in the fourth.

The Cardinals stole six bases and used one of them to get a runner to third in the seventh, where he scored on a sacrifice fly.

Louisville hit two homers during its winning rally against Tigers closer Carson Spiers.

While Clemson was losing, ACC Atlantic Division leader N.C. State (29-4, 12-3) was losing to Boston College, so the Tigers didn't lose any ground on Sunday.

Clemson has midweek home games against Charleston Southern and Furman before heading to Tallahassee for a weekend set with Florida State (19-12, 7-8).

Elsewhere
* College of Charleston's weekend sweep of James Madison (18-15, 2-7) moved the Cougars (22-11, 7-2) into a tie for the Colonial Athletic Association lead with Elon (18-14, 7-2). Coach Chad Holbrook's team fell behind 8-5 on Sunday when James Madison scored five runs in the seventh. But the College responded with five in the eighth, capped by Chaz Davey's two-run single, to take a 10-8 lead which held up. The Cougars step out of league play to face Dallas Baptist next weekend.

* An eight-run sixth inning propelled Coastal Carolina (22-11-1, 8-4) to a series-clinching 14-5 victory over South Alabama (14-17, 4-8) and allowed the Chanticleers to remain a game ahead of Georgia Southern (18-14, 7-5) in the Sun Belt Conference East Division standings.  The Chanticleers continue their stretch of nine straight road games with a visit to Little Rock (13-19, 7-5) next weekend.

* By scoring a run without a hit in the 12th inning to win Saturday's series finale at Alabama (22-11, 4-8), South Carolina (19-13, 3-9) avoided falling into a tie with Kentucky (17-15, 2-10) for last place overall in the SEC. Even so, the Gamecocks would not qualify for the SEC Tourmament (the top 12 teams go) should the season end today. Carolina faces the second of three straight Thursday-Saturday series when it visits Florida (21-13, 4-8) this week.  As much as Carolina has struggled in league play, it is just one game behind three teams tied for 10th place overall and a better position in the tournament chase.

* Furman (4-5, 11-20) had a frustrating series in losing two of three at UNC Greensboro (20-9, 5-4). The Paladins took a 5-0 lead in the second inning Friday, then had the game suspended until Saturday because of rain. After completing that game with a 10-3 win, Furman took a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth of Game 2 in a bid for a fifth straight SoCon win. But UNCG smacked two two-run homers after two were out to tie the score.  Then, the Spartans hit a two-run homer in the 13th to win the game, 11-9. Paladins coach Brett Harker asked the umpires to discuss whether the ball went foul before leaving the field, but the call stood.  On Sunday, David Dunlavey gave the Paladins a superb outing, but Furman trailed 1-0 until tying the game in the seventh. The Paladins got runners on first and third with none out in the ninth, but the next three batters struck out. Greensboro won the game in the bottom of the inning when the first three batters reached. The Paladins try to right the ship next weekend with a home series against second-place East Tennessee State (23-8, 4-2). The Buccaneers are smarting, too, having dropped two of three to VMI (8-24, 4-5).

* Wofford (21-13, 4-2) scored three runs in the ninth inning for a 7-4 win over Western Carolina (13-15, 3-6) to get its first-ever series win at Cullowhee. The host Catamounts had tied the score in the eighth before the Terriers' rally. Up next weekend for Wofford is a home series with VMI.

* Winthrop (17-14, 8-4) fell two games behind Campbell (20-11, 10-2) iun the Big South Conference with a 7-1 loss to High Point in the series finale while the Camels were beating Gardner-Webb, 11-3. The Eagles face UNC Asheville (11-19, 6-6) next weekend.

* Presbyterian (14-18, 7-5) moved into fourth place in the Big South as it completed a series sweep of UNC Asheville, 7-2. The Blue Hose travel up I-26 to meet USC Upstate (15-17, 4-8) next weekend. The Spartans are coming off a 7-6 win over Radford to get their first Big South series victory.

* Charleston Southern (12-24, 2-10) used its 16-3 win at Longwood on Sunday to double its Big South Conference win total on the season. The Buccaneers are at home against Gardner-Webb (15-13, 6-6) next weekend.

* Florence-Darlington Tech's (33-9, 13-3)  weekend four-game sweep of USC Lancaster (24-12, 10-10) to build a one-game lead over Spartanburg Methodist (22-14, 11-3) entering their NJCAA Region 10 showdown series at Mooneyham Field in Spartanburg next weekend. The Stingers have won 10 games.

* USC Aiken (20-17, 12-9) could have moved into a second-place tie with Flagler (20-17, 13-8) in the Peach Belt Conference standings with a win over last-place Augusta (17-21, 6-18). Instead, the Jaguars won, 5-4, to knock the Pacers into fifth place based on winning percentage.

* USC Salkehatchie (13-31, 4-16) kept its extremely slim prospect of escaping last place in the Region 10 standings alive by winning three of four over USC Union (9-17, 5-11).  The Indians trail the Bantams by three games. Salkehatchie has four league games remaining while Union has eight. Salkehatchie wins and Union losses must total at least nine for the Indians to finish sixth instead of seventh.

* Benedict (12-11, 7-5) stole 14 base in Sunday's doubleheader split with Clark Atlanta to give the Tigers 150 in 173 tries this season.

* Claflin (19-10) got rained out of a scheduled doubleheader with Virginia State, so the Panthers are sitting on a seven-game winning streak.
