Palmetto State Baseball team of the week, Jan. 29-Feb. 7

Lander (3-0 for the period)
(beat Erskine twice, beat Queens)

After going to the NCAA Division II College World Series in 2014 and 2016, the Bearcats went through some lean times with three straight losing seasons.  Lander turned things around in a COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, going 13-8.

It looks like coach Jason Burke's fifth squad is poised for good things again. The Bearcats scored nine runs in their final two innings in the opener against Erskine, then got solid offense and shutout pitching to beat their area rivals again.

The first game away from Dolny Stadium was more of the same. Senior Ward Betts went 4-for-4 and scored four runs, helping Lander to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2014.

Betts, who didn't start the opener, was 8-for-11 with two doubles, a homer, a steal, three RBIs and seven  runs scored.

Up next for the Bearcats: Game 1 of a Saturday home DH vs. Claflin, 1 p.m.
