Palmetto State Baseball team of the week, Feb. 8-14: USC Beaufort

USC Beaufort (3-1 for the week)

(beat Columbia International; went 2-1 vs. Florida Memorial)

When Ted Falkner took over as USC Beaufort head coach last summer he inherited a program with three consecutive losing seasons.

The early results of his debut season in the Lowcountry look promising. The Sand Sharks (6-4) went 2-1 at Florida Memorial to open their Sun Conference schedule. It was USCB's first conference series win since 2019 and put them above .500 in league play for the first time since 2017. USCB has matched its six wins of the CoVID-19-shortened 2020 season.

Leandy Castro has been the offensive leader so far, batting .389 with 2 homers and 9 RBIs in 10 games. He had a two-run single to put the Sand Sharks ahead in the rubber game at Florida Memorial on Saturday.

Earlier in week, six pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts in an 11-7 no-hit victory over Columbia International. Fifteen walks and a couple of hit batsmen kept the game close. Oddly USCB has walked only 23 in its other nine games.

Eamonn Collins has saves in three
of USCB's six wins this season.

USCB pitchers have struck out 78 in 75.1 innings.

Eamonn Collins, who has moved to the bullpen this season after being a starter his first two years, has three saves.

Up next for the Sand Sharks: St. Andrews in a 2 p.m. Tuesday home game.
