Gamecocks get Virginia; Blue Hose play at Vanderbilt

As was widely speculated over the weekend, Old Dominion will be the top seed for the Columbia Regional of the NCAA Tournament beginning Friday. South Carolina, the No. 2 seed, will face Virginia at noon Friday in the regional opener. It will air on ESPN2. Old Dominion plays Jacksonville at 7 p.m.

Presbyterian will play in the Nashville Regional, facing No. 4 national seed Vanderbilt in the first round. Tim Corbin was coach at Presbyterian when it reinstated its baseball program in 1988.  The game is set for 7 p.m. Friday on the SEC Network. Indiana State and Georgia Tech are the other teams.

Every NCAA Tournament game will be on some ESPN-affiliated network or streamed on ESPN3.

* Columbia cooking: Old Dominion is making its first NCAA appearance since 2014., when it played in Columbia and went 0-2 ... The Monarchs lead Division I with 101 home runs ... Former USC pitching coach Jerry Meyers was ODU's head coach for six years in from 2005-10 ...  South Carolina and Virginia haven't met since the 2011 College World Series, when the Gamecocks went 2-0 over the Cavs on the way to their second straight national title ... USC played the top four national seeds, five of the top seven and six of the top 15 ... Jacksonville was 11-31 in the regular season before going 5-1 in the Atlantic Sun Tournament ... The Dolphins join Norfolk State and Southern as the only teams with losing records to qualify ... South Carolina is the only team in the regional to not have a regular batting above .300 ... The Gamecocks' Wes Clarke has hit more homers (22) than Jacksonville's team (21) ... Chris Dengler, out of Charleston's Bishop England High School play six games for Old Dominion - starting five - early in the season, but hasn't played since Feb. 26. He was batting .267 ...

* Nashville nuggets: Blue Hose coach Elton Pollock played for Tim Corbin at Presbyterian ... PC went 4-1 against Big South Conference regular-season champion Campbell, which earned an at-large bid ... Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall has 1,310 career coaching wins, including 1,102 with the Yellow Jackets ...
