Half of field set for Tigerville Regional

I neglected to mention that Columbus State won the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship over the weekend with a series win over North Georgia.

That qualifies the Cougars for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional beginning May 27 on the campus of North Greenville. Columbus State (29-14) joins the host Crusaders (33-11), winners of the Conference Carolinas Tournament, and South Atlantic Conference Tournament Champion Wingate (30-12).

North Greenville finished in second place in the regular-season standings, while Columbus State and Wingate finished fourth.

Three at-large teams will be selected to complete the field for the six-team, double-elimination event. Those selections will be announced during the Division II selection show at 10 p.m. Sunday. The show will stream on NCAA.com.

The NCAA previously announced five other teams are in contention for the final three spots. They include regular-season champions Catawba (32-9) of the SAC, Mount Olive (35-10) of Conference Carolinas, UNC Pembroke (29-13) of the Peach Belt and at-large hopefuls Newberry and North Georgia. Newberry (25-15) finished third in the SAC, while North Georgia (30-15) finished second in the PBC regular season and was runner-up to Columbus State in the championship series.

All games will be played at Ray and Bea Dillard Field in Tigerville. The winner advances to the Division II College World Series June 5-12 in Cary, N.C. Seven other regional champions will complete the field.

NOTE: I have no idea of all the criteria and metrics involved in selecting teams, but my guess is it will be difficult for either Newberry or North Georgia to be selected over one of the regular-season champs. Just my opinion.
