Florence-Darlington Tech completed its run through the NJCAA Region 10 Tournament  Monday with a 13-7 win over Spartanburg Methodist in the championship game.

The Stingers (44-6) advance to play Monroe College of New York in the Eastern District Tournament Friday, Saturday and, if necessary, Saturday in Florence. A best-of--three series will determine a representative in the Junior College World Series later this month.

Tater Goodson's homer gave Spartanburg Methodist (35-18) a 2-0 lead in the second inning before the Stingers rallied.

Tech scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead, only to have Kobe Miller hit a three-run homer in the sixth to make the score 7-5.

Down 10-5, SMC got a two-run double from Godson in the eighth and later in the inning got the potential tying run to the plate. Tech pitcher Josh Patterson got Sean Flannery to ground out to end the threat.  The Stingers salted the game away with a three-run eighth. Patterson struck out the final two hitters of the ninth and the celebration began.

"These guys have fun," said Stingers coach Preston McDonald. "They hate to lose."

Luke Wood had three hits for the Stingers. Every FD Tech batters reached base at least twice.

The Stingers have scored 502 runs in 50 games this season.

In normal years, SMC would be be going to a four-team Eastern District Tournament as the host region's second team. But COVID-19 protocols changed that. Pioneers coach Tim Wallace said that's just the latest in a series of unusual circumstances his players have had to endure over the past year because of the impact of the Coronavirus.
