Stingers qualify for junior college World Series

Florence-Darlington Tech punched its ticket to the NJCAA World Series by beating Monroe College, 13-1, to sweep the Eastern District Tournament in two games

The Stingers (46-6) will be making the second World Series appearance in program history, joining the 2017 team. Coach Preston McDonald's squad is the third team to qualify for the 10-team event, following Miami Dade and Shelton State. The tournament begins May 29 in Grand Junction, Colo.

J.T. Marr hit a grand slam and Scott McDonough doubled and hit his team-leading 14th homer to drive in three runs  Hunter Parks struck out 11 in seven innings.

The Stingers scored 10 runs or more for the 34th time in 52 games, giving them 527 runs scored this season.

Monroe completed its season with a 33-7-1 record.

Elsewhere:  Brett Kerry, previously South Carolina's closer, pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out 10 in his first start of the season and the Gamecocks clinched an SEC series win at Kentucky. It was the first complete-game shutout for a USC pitcher since 2014 ...  Davis Sharpe struck out eight in 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief and Clemson rallied to beat Florida State for the first time since 2018 ...  Jeffery Brown's seventh hit of the doubleheader tied the score in the ninth inning of Game 2, Crosby Jones followed with an RBI single and Chace Cooper finished with his fourth inning of shutout relief as The Citadel snapped a 15-game losing streak ... Colin Davis homered twice and drove in four runs as Wofford pounded Western Carolina in Game 1, but the Catamounts rallied for a split ... Winthrop scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning to win Game 1 and turned a triple play en route to a comeback win in Game 2 ... Campbell held USC Upstate to three hits and no runs in a doubleheader to complete a series sweep and take over first place in the Big South. Upstate fell into third place behind Gardner-Webb  .... Brody Fahr had three hits and drove in four runs in Game 1 as Presbyterian clinched a Big South road series win. Fahr added three hits in Game 2, when the Blue Hose scores seven runs in the seventh to win and tighten their hold on fourth place ... UNC Wilmington staged a late rally to tie and got a walk-off win to move ahead of College of Charleston in the CAA South Division standings ... South Alabama evened its series with Coastal Carolina.
