News digest, Wednesday, Aug. 4

I've developed a bad habit of not staying up to date on college baseball once the season is over. There have been several noteworthy events over the last couple of months, so I wanted to offer some updates.

Trojan, Bearcats get academic honors
Anderson's Christian Carpenter and Lander's Roury Glanton and Marshall Thompson were named second-team NCAA Division II academic all-American by the College Sports Information Directors Association.

Earlier, the trio, as well as Anderson's Chandler Castleberry, were named academic all-district 3.

Benedict leads nation again
Benedict finished as NCAA Division II's national stolen base leader for the ninth time in the last 11 seasons.  The Tigers had 76 steals in the COVID 19-shortened 2021 season. Coach Selwyn Young's team averaged 9.5 steals per game.

Benedict has signed 35 players to join its team for 2022. Twelve are from South Carolina.

Brittle joins Buccaneers
Former Clemson and College of Charleston player Thomas Brittle has joined the Charleston Southern staff as a volunteer assistant.

Smith, Toman invited to Team USA tryouts
Tristan Smith of Boiling Springs High and Tucker Toman of Hammond Academy are among 40 players invited to compete for spots on the Team USA U18 team.

Chanticleers team, individual honored
Coastal Carolina's 2016 College World Series championship team and five individuals from that squad have been selected for the 2021 class of the school's athletic Hall of Fame. The individuals are Mike Morrison, Connor Owings, Michael Paez, Zach Remillard and G.K. Young.

Coastal coach Gary Gilmore has been selected for the 2022 class of the American Baseball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame.

ABCA honors teams
The American Baseball Coaches Association recently announced winners of its academic excellence awards
NCAA Division I:  South Carolina, The Citadel, USC Upstate, Winthrop, Wofford.
NCAA Division II: Coker.
NAIA: USC Beaufort.

Fleet add pitching coach
Erskine has named Daniel Perez as its pitching coach. Formerly he was pitching coach at Hillsborough CC in Florida.

Reinoso signs with Angels
Erskine junior Dayan Reinoso has signed a pro contract with the Los Angeles Angels. Reinoso hit .340 with 11 homers in 2021.

Patriots move leagues
Francis Marion has become an official member of Conference Carolinas. The Patriots had been in the Peach Belt Conference.

Limestone hires Harker
Brett Harker, head baseball coach at Furman until the school yanked the rug out from under the program, has been hired to the same position at Limestone. I'm not confident the below link to the announcement works, but I gave it a shot.

Thompson returns to Fire Ants
Former USC Sumter player and assistant coach Will Thompson has returned to the school as an assistant. He returns to the Fire Ants after two seasons as an assistant at Francis Marion.

PC adds lights
Lights have been added to Presbyterian's baseball facility, giving the Blue Hose the option of night and late afternoon home games. The state's nine other NCAA Division I programs already have lights.

Bulldogs honor Betchman
Former baseball standout Bo Betchman is part of the 2021 class for The Citadel's athletic Hall of Fame.

USC coaching staff shuffles
Assistant coach Stuart Lake posted on social media earlier this week that he is leaving South Carolina's coaching staff. He joins Mike Current and Skylar Meade in departing since the end of the season.
Earlier, Justin Parker was hired as pitching coach after holding the same job at Indiana and Chad Caillet was named assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
Two Gamecocks return
While the USC coaching staff has been revamped, two of the most productive players from 2021 have announced plans to spurn pro offers and return for 2022. Outfielder Andrew Eyster and pitcher Julian Bosnic plan to be back.

Clarke, Marks honored
South Carolina DH Wes Clarke was a second-team choice and USC Upstate's Jordan Marks was a third-team selection on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association's all-American teams.

Also, Marks and Spartans teammate Alex Garbrick signed pro contracts with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies after they were picked the in the MLB draft.

Former Wofford pitcher Matt Milburn has been selected for the school's athletic Hall of Fame.
