When I saw West Virginia was coming to the Grand Strand this weekend for the Baseball at the Beach Tournament, it struck me that this might be a good time for an update on Weston Mazey.
Weston, the son of WVU coach Randy Mazey and his wife Amanda, suffered a serious head injury March 9, 2021, when he ran into a fence during a game. He spent 73 days in a hospital and/or rehab center.
Randy Mazey was a star player at Clemson under Bill Wilhelm and has had several coaching stops.
Amanda Mazey provided me an update via e-mail. Weston (nicknamed Wammer) was cleared to resume baseball activities last June and is trying out for his high school varsity team. He's was also cleared to play non-checking ice hockey. He's also back to hunting and fishing.
Last May, he, Amanda and his sister Sierra were able to fly to Austin, Texas, to surprise the team and assistants (Randy knew he was coming). The Mountaineers beat the Longhorns on the night he walked onto the field.
During Weston's recovery, the Mazeys were in contact with several other families going through similar things. They were decided to create TeamWammer (teamwammer.com), a foundation to raise money for the WVU Medicine Children's Center and the Shepherd Center rehab facility. Also benefiting will be Canine Companions for Independence. The Mazeys also established a program called Country Roads Journey to Hope to help young patients' families with expenses.
The initial goal for Team Wammer was $100,000, which was reached in three weeks. Now, the fund is at more than $174,000, and the Mazeys hope to hit $200,000 by the one-year anniversary of Weston's injury. The Mazeys have partnered with the Hoss Foundation (founded by former WVU quarterback Jeff Hostetler) and all donations are tax deductible.
