Anderson (3-0 for the period)
(beat Bluefield State three times, including a pair of walk-off wins on Saturday)
Newberry (3-0 for the period)
(beat Augusta three times, two in walk-off fashion)
It's barely one week into the season and I've already decided to award co-team of the week honors. Both Anderson and Newberry got a pair of walk-off wins, although by slightly different pasts.
Anderson was one pitch away from securing victory in both games of Saturday's doubleheader in regulation, only to have Bluefield State rally both times. Fielding lapses were a big contributor: Bluefield's first six runs on Saturday were unearned. Unfazed. coach P.J. Zocchi's Trojans came back to win, then completed the sweep behind Walker Noland's solid five-inning start.
Newberry, too, saw leads evaporate late in the first and third games, but didn't crumble because of a little adversity. Braylin Marine broke a 4-4 tie on Friday with his ninth-inning sacrifice fly. An early eight-run lead in the second game of the series turned a little tight when Augusta got the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth inning.
In the series finale, Augusta made a bid to salvage a game, taking am 8-7 lead with a two-run seventh. But Hunter French was the hero coach coach Russell Triplett's team with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning.
Up next for the Trojans: Augusta on Tuesday
Up next for the Wolves: Georgia College on Wednesday.
