Palmetto State Baseball team of the week, Feb. 7-13: Francis Marion

Francis Marion (2-0 for the week)
(beat Queens, beat North Greenville)

Francis Marion was a charter member of the Peach Belt Conference when the league was formed in 1990, but the school left for Conference Carolinas entering the 2021-22 school year.

It looks like coach Art Inabinet's Patriots are primed to make some noise in their first season in the new surroundings. FMU defeated Queens and recenter Conference Carolinas big dog North Greenville in Greenwood on Friday to move its record to 5-0. It's the best start for the Patriots since the 2017 squad won its first 10 games.

The Patriots got behind early against Queens before taking the lead for good in the sixth. Against North Greenville in a game not counting in the league standings, FMU could manage just one run out of three Crusaders errors in the first inning. Francis Marion took an 8-1 lead before North Greenville came all the way back to lead 11-10 after six. FMU scored three runs in the seventh and held on, 13-12, stranding NGU runners in scoring position to end the game.

Inabinet has won 717 games at the four-year college level. Throw in his time at North Greenville when it was a junior college and he's knocking on the door of 800 career victories.

Up next for the Patriots: at home vs. USC Aiken Tuesday before making its Conference Carolinas debut with a home series with Belmont Abbey next weekend.
