Palmetto State Baseball team of the week, March 14-20: The Citadel

The Citadel (3-1 for the week)
(lost to Texas; went 3-0 vs. St. Peter's)

One of the goals when Tony Skole was hired as head coach at The Citadel - stated or not - was to get the program to enjoy some of the success he had there as a player in the 1990s. He helped the Bulldogs win back-to-back Southern Conference championships and a spot in the 1990 College World Series.

It's been a tough go so far. Four of his first five teams in Charleston had losing records, with the lone exception a 10-6 record in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. Wrapped around that were 12-win seasons, including 12-39 last year.

So, El Cid entered 2022 without having won more than 12 games since 2018. That's been bettered, now. Sunday's 18-3 pasting of St. Peter's to complete a three-game sweep gave the Bulldogs a 13-6 record.

There have been several heroes so far. Cole Simpson (.319) leads the Bulldogs with 25 RBI and has reached base in every game. Travis Lott (.345), Ryan McCarthy (.313),  Dylan Costa (.303) and Tilo Skole (.292, 17 RBI 10 sacrifices), the coach's son, have had their moments.

The pitching has been good, too. Fifth-year Bulldog Devin Beckley (3-1) got his first career shutout over the weekend, lowering his ERA to 1.71. Ben Hutchins (4-0, 3.14) and Cameron Reeves (2-1, 3.96) have been solid, as well.

If The Citadel wants take its goals in increments, next up is winning 20 or more games for the first time since 2015. Then, dare the Bulldogs aim for a winning record in a full season for the first time since 2013?

Up next for the Bulldogs:  A Tuesday home game against South Carolina.
