A look back at the weekend, Feb. 26

It was a great week for a lot of state teams. Erskine, Florence-Darlington Tech, Newberry, Presbyterian, South Carolina, Southern Wesleyan, USC Beaufort, USC Lancaster and Wofford all went unbeaten.

* Penn's pitching staff brought USC's offense down to earth a little over the weekend. The Gamecocks were held to one run on Saturday, but it was enough because the Carolina's pitching. An inability to get hits in clutch situations cost USC frequently in 2022, and that bugaboo returned in Sunday's series finale.

Carolina received 11 walks and seven batters were hit by pitchers, but the Gamecocks stranded 19 runners. The first loss of the season was a very real possibility until Gavin Casas and Will McGillis hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth.

USC has hit 26 home runs and been hit by pitches 31 times during its 8-0 start.

* Wofford hasn't lost since opening day. The Terriers had a strong finishing kick in the series finale against Kent State, scoring nine runs in the final two innings to push their wining streak to six.

* Who had Clemson pitchers getting 40 strikeouts against UCF in the office pool?  Now, did you have them getting swept as well? The Tigers suffered three frustrating losses at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. A ninth-inning error set the stage for the winning runs to score in the opener and waste another good start from Ryan Ammons (2 runs, 10 Ks in 5 innings). UCF profited from a four-run inning late in Game 2, then outscored Clemson 7-0 in the final three innings. Like on Friday, a late error again was costly.

After allow one extra base hit in the four wins to open the season, Clemson pitchers were touched for  eight doubles and seven homers by the Knights

To add insult to injury, someone on Twitter posted video of some UCF players running down the hill at Death Valley to celebrate the sweep.

A few other tidbits from the weekend:
* USC Aiken scored five runs in the ninth inning to tie Sunday's series finale with Embry-Riddle, only to lose in the 10th.
* Presbyterian got its first win over a Big Ten team since in 10 years by beating Northwestern on Saturday, and coach Elton Pollock's team enjoyed it so much they got another one on Sunday against Michigan State.
* Florence-Darlington Tech deserves some credit having enough flexibility to help out NJCAA Region 10 neighbor and rival USC Sumter. The Fire Ants found out late in the week that their four-game road trip to East Tennessee was postponed. FD Tech, meanwhile, was scheduled to have a round-robin with Monroe and East Georgia. But Stingers coach Preston McDonald was willing to adjust his schedule and Tim Medlin's Fire Ants benefited.  Each team got to play three games over the weekend.
