Roth, Chlup, Padysak in World Baseball Classic

Michael Roth, one of the heroes of South Carolina's back-to-back College World Series titles, is one of at least three players with state connections named to rosters for the World Baseball Classic on Thursday. Also, outfielder Marek Chlup of North Greenville and pitcher Daniel Padysak of Charleston Southern will play for their native Czech Republic in the 16-team event, set for March in Japan and the USA.

A left-handed pitcher, Roth played at Riverside High in Greer, His mother was born in England, making him eligible to play for Great Britain. He played for England in the 2019 European Baseball Championships and the 2013 World Baseball Classic qualifiers.

Roth saw sporadic duty in the 2010 season at South Carolina until he was called to pitch an elimination game against Clemson in Omaha. He pitched a complete game and went on to be a stalwart on the 2011 national champs and the 2012 CWS runners-up.

Roth played several seasons of pro baseball in the USA, compiling a 2-1 record in the majors.

Chlup was one of the heroes of North Greenville's 2022 NCAA Division II World Series championship team, batting .390 with 12 homers and 75 RBI. He has a career batting average of .372 with 25 homers for the Crusaders, including a .643 mark to start this season. He will take a leave of absence to play for his homeland.

Paydysak, a right-hander, has a 7-11 record and a 5.11 ERA in three seasons for Charleston Southern. He has struck out 114 in 125 innings.

If I missed any players with state connections, I apologize. I checked rosters but didn't recognize any other names.
