Game of the day
Southern Wesleyan 5, Lee 4, 12 innings, Game 1
Back when both schools were in the NAIA, they met 27 times as Southern States Athletic Conference rivals, with Lee win 21 times.

The series was renewed in Cleveland, Tenn., this weekend after an 11-year hiatus, and while Southern Wesleyan went 1-2, that win was worth noting.

Lee scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, but the Warriors answered with a run each time. Matthew Batts had a leadoff triple in the sixth, but he was still at third when the inning ended.

A caught stealing nipped a possible Warriors rally in the eighth, and the teams went to extra innings.

Lee ran itself out of an inning, too. The first two Flames in the 10th were hit by pitches, but the lead runner was thrown out trying to steal third with one out. A single and another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, but Warriors catcher Tyler Jackson threw out Brandon Daniels trying to score on an errant pitch by Christopher Hund to end the inning.

Cam Mitchem was hit by a pitch to lead off the SWU 12th. A walk and a single loaded the bases. With one out, Jason Culley hit a grounder to shortstop. The Flames got a force out, but were unable to complete an inning-ending double play as Mitchem scored.

Hund retired Lee in order in the bottom of the inning to close out the game.

The Flames scored 10 runs in the first two innings of the nightcap to win 12-2 - the most lopsided Lee win in the all-time series.

Southern scoop: Mitchem was 3-for-9 for the weekend, hitting a homer and driving in five ... The Warriors open their home schedule with a 4 p.m. game Tuesday against Anderson at Dr. C. Keith Connor Field.

Honorable mention game of the day
USC Union 12, Roane State 11, 5 innings, darkness, Game 2 -
Tyler Strickland's single provided the fourth lead change of the game and gave USC Union a darkness-shortened walk-off victory and doubleheader split in Jonesville. Roane State won the opener, 9-8, by holding off a late Bantams comeback.
