NCAA suggests changes

The Baseball Rules Committee of the NCAA has made some recommendations for rules changes during a meeting in Indianapolis this week.

New rules proposals must be approved by the NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel at an Aug. 8 meeting.

Proposed changes include:
* Expanding the use of one-way communication to allow catchers to call pitches electronically and for third-base coaches to relay signals.
* Requiring batters to be alert to the pitcher by the time the 20-second action clock reaches 8 seconds (It's currently 10 seconds).
* A double first base could be an optional rule. (The SEC used a double-first base in its 2024 tournament.)
* Players already on the field at the time of a potential altercation would not be ejected if they are judged not to be a participant by their actions or not contributing to the escalation of an on-field confrontation. (There was controversy over the current rule's enforcement in a Georgia-Mississippi State game in the regular season and a Clemson-Florida game in an NCAA Super Regional. The Tigers' Nolan Nawrocki was ejected after heading in the direction of a fracas in front of the Clemson dugout.)
* The rule requiring a hitter to remain in the batter's box between pitches would be eliminated.

Gamecocks visit Cougars in fall

As part of fall workouts, South Carolina and College of Charleston will play a game at Patriots' Point on Nov. 7, Cougars coach Chad Holbrook announced Friday. Ticket information for the 6 p.m. game will be announced later.

Note: Unless NCAA rules have changed recently, the game counts against each school's 56-game limit for 2025, but results and statistics do not count.

Charleston honors three

Former Summerville High and USC Aiken star Bo Parks and administrators Ted Jones and Walt Nadzak have been selected for induction into the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame. Induction ceremonies are set for Sunday's Charleston Riverdogs' game against the Columbia Fireflies at Joe Riley Park.

Jones has been in area youth baseball since the 1960s. Nadzak was athletic director at The Citadel during the program's greatest baseball successes.
