In case you missed it

* It appears Monte Lee is the first person ever to be head baseball coach at three different South Carolina NCAA Division I programs. He coached at College of Charleston and Clemson before taking over at South Carolina on an interim basis on Saturday, replacing Paul Mainieri.

The topic came up on an X post by SportsTalk Media Network and I did some digging.

Records are spotty, but research indicates Billy Laval coached baseball at four schools: Erskine, Furman, Newberry and South Carolina. I'm cloudy about what was considered major college baseball during Laval's time (1905 first season to final season in 1950, with several breaks in between where he coached other sports).

Mike McGuire of Winthrop previously coached at USC Upstate and Lander, and John D. McMillan coached baseball at USC, Erskine and The Citadel between 1945 and 1953.

Chad Holbrook of College of Charleston previously coached at South Carolina.

Ralph Ciabattari (Charleston Southern, College of Charleston), John Daurity (USC Upstate, Wofford), Gary Gilmore (USC Aiken, Coastal Carolina),  Brett Harker (Furman, Limestone), Tim Medlin (Newberry, USC Sumter), Ted Petoskey (USC, Wofford), Jack Powers, (Furman, USC) and Horace Turbeville (Newberry, Winthrop) also coached at two schools in state.

Some schools either have no records or have cut records down to a "modern era."

If you're aware of others who were head baseball coach at multiple S.C. schools, e-mail me at rudyjones@palmettostatebaseball.com

* Charleston Southern honored members of its 1996 Big South Conference championship team as part of the Gardner-Webb series over the weekend. The team, coached by Randy Mazey, had a 30-24-1 record and competed in the NCAA Tournament's Clemson Regional. I could find no official story on the event, but Mazey posted this on his X account:

"As a coach, sometimes you have a team that changes the lives of everyone involved. I wouldn’t be who I am without these 1996 Big South Champs.  Only regional team in CSU history. Thanks Coach (Karl) Kuhn for bringing us back together.  I’m proud of who they were & who they have become."

Mazey is a former Clemson player who retired after a long tenure at West Virginia.

In 2025, Kuhn's first Buccaneers squad had the school's first winning record since the 1996 championship season. The school hasn't have back-to-back winning seasons a since 1987-88.

* Dating to last season, Coastal Carolina has won 28 consecutive games against Sun Belt Conference competition. The most recent three came as run-rule wins against James Madison over the weekend to improve the Chants to 6-0 in the conference this season. It marked the first time in school history for three run-rule wins in a conference series.

* Anderson retired former coach Joe Miller's No. 14 jersey in ceremonies prior to Saturday's doubleheader against Emory & Henry. Miller was head coach of the Trojans for 23 years, retiring after the 2019 season. He played for Anderson and later Newberry, where his father, Clyde, was coach in the 1980s.

* Clemson committed five errors in being swept over the weekend at Notre Dame, and has had just seven errorless games in 25 outings this season.

The Tigers have been outscored 23-0 in No. 1 starter Aidan Knaak's last three outings.

After being held to four singles on Friday, Clemson was 25 for 63 (.397) over the final two games, but left 21 batters on base.
