Braves hire ex-USC announcer
Jim Powell, one-time baseball announcer and football/basketball analyst for University of South Carolina broadcasts, has been hired for the Atlanta Braves radio network, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Braves are also reported to be trying to get Don Sutton back. Powell has been working with Bob Uecker on Milwaukee Brewers broadcasts.

    The University of South Carolina set a team record with a composite 3.114 grade-point average in the fall semester, the school announced Thursday.

  • Smelley can play in 2009Former University of South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley has received a waiver from the Southeastern Conference allowing him to play baseball for the Crimson Tide this season. Incidentally, USC and Alabama do not play in the regular season.

  • Smoak ranked No. 15Keith Law of Scouts Inc. ranks former USC first baseman Justin Smoak, now in the Texas Rangers farm system, the 15th-best prospect in the minor leagues, according to ESPN.



    He also is rated No. 2 among first basemen. Former USC outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall, who was dismissed from the team during the 2007 season, is ranked the No. 9 third base prospect in the minors. He is with the Cleveland organization.

    Matt Wieters, son of a former Citadel player by the same name, is ranked the No. 1 prospect overall and, obviously, the best catcher. He is in the Orioles' system.

    Former Furman pitcher and Taylors resident Jay Jackson is listed as the No. 2 prospect in the Chicago Cubs system.
