News Digest, Jan. 9

The Citadel sets banquetYou can't have a hot stove league without a rubber chicken circuit. The Citadel will hold its fifth annual Hot Stove Banquet Jan. 30 at Mark Clark Hall on The Citadel campus. Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry will be the featured speaker.

The event is an annual collaboration between the Charleston RiverDogs minor league team and The Citadel. In addition to the banquet, a silent auction will be held with proceeds going to The Citadel Foundation and to MUSC’s Storm Eye Institute, the RiverDogs’ primary charity.

  • Gagg reportedly enrolledRivals.com reports pitcher Bobby Gagg has enrolled for spring classes at Coastal Carolina. Gagg, who had a 6-3 record and 3.28 earned-run average in 2008, is not listed on the roster on the school Web site as of Jan. 8.

  • USC Salkehatchie building a press boxUSC Salkehatchie is selling bricks ($50) to build a press box at its baseball stadium. Admission to the Jan. 31 opener against Walters State is free. I can speak for ink-stained wretches everywhere: they prefer to be able to cover a game from a spot shielded from inclement weather.

  • Easy interview
One function of the halftime interview at football or basketball games is to allow the play-by-play man to take a break. That often leaves the color analyst to fill the void by interviewing anyone he can find who might be semi-interesting to the audience. Ron Smith, Furman's baseball coach and color analyst on most basketball broadcasts, found a familiar face at halftime of the Paladins' game at Samford Thursday night -- one of his pitchers. Blaine Rosenburg, a freshman from Birmingham, was at the game and helped his coach out by being the interviewee. OK, Ron, when it comes time to give a young pitcher a chance at some point during the season, remember how Blaine bailed you out at Samford.
