News Digest, Feb. 10, Part 1

More TV dates found
CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast) hasn't posted its baseball schedule on its Web site yet, but the University of Georgia lists eight of its games as being on the regional cable channel. Included is an April 1 visit to Clemson. Others are at Alabama (March 15), Mississippi State (March 20 & 22), vs. Georgia Tech (March 25), LSU (April 4), Florida (May 2) and Vanderbilt (May 9).

(Mini-airing of grievances No. 1 follows) CSS and its college baseball coverage is the only channel keeping me from ditching cable and going to a satellite hookup.(end of mini-airing of grievances No. 1)
  • Georgia schedule

  • USC tickets left
USC officials report there are tickets remaining for the opening series at the new Carolina Stadium baseball park. Games are against Duquesne Feb. 21-23.

I know the name eventually will be changed when a corporate sponsor is found, but I like "Carolina Stadium."
  • USC tickets

  • Ex-USC star in coaching
Give me some kind of a record book to read and I'm happier than a pig in slop. I love to look at numbers and records. I went on the NJCAA site Monday night looking for the Spartanburg Methodist/Limestone JV scores and stumbled upon the organization's baseball record book. In looking at coaches records, I saw where Randy Martz has been head coach at Lewis and Clark (Ill.) for 19 seasons. Sure enough, it's the ex-USC and major-league pitcher. Martz helped the Gamecocks finish runner-up in the 1977 College World Series, then went on to pitch for the Cubs.

    CSU banquet is Monday
Charleston Southern is having its preseason baseball dinner next Monday at the Wingate Hotel near campus. USC coach Ray Tanner is the featured speaker. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Ray Tanner Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the betterment of economically and medically disadvantaged children and their families.

(Mini-airing of grievances No. 2 follows) One of the foundation's goals was to build a Miracle Field in the Columbia area where the disadvantaged can enjoy playing baseball. I made a donation to the foundation last year in memory of friend Tom Price, the former Sports Information Director at USC and a great lover of baseball. While I'm glad my gift went going to a noble cause, I was disappointed that it took several months for my check to be cashed and I never received any acknowledgment of the gift, even for tax purposes. I certainly wasn't giving to be acknowledged, but it would have been nice to be reminded the gift was appreciated. Don't let my rant stop you from supporting it.(End of mini-airing of grievances No. 2).
