USC Lancaster is playing its home games at Lancaster High School's stadium. My friend Robert Howey writes in The Lancaster News that the city of Lancaster was able to use some hospitality tax money to help provide some renovations at the facility.
Elon favoredSoutheastern Baseball.com picks Elon to win the Southern Conference title, with College of Charleston second, The Citadel fourth, Furman fifth and Wofford 10th. I believe a fifth-place finish for Furman is more likely than the eighth-place finish predicted by the league coaches and media. The Cougars' Jesse Simpson is the Web site's pick as league pitcher of the year. He's joined on the preseason all-conference team by teammate Brandon Sizemore at second baseball, Wofford's Michael Gilmartin at shortstop, Furman's Reese Wade at DH and The Citadel's Sonny Meade in the outfield.
Coastal favored
SE Baseball.com also picks Coastal Carolina to win the Big South, with Winthrop third, Charleston Southern ninth and Presbyterian 10th. Chanticleers' reliever Nick McCully is the preseason pick for pitcher of the year. He's joined on the all-Big South team by teammates Tyler Bortnick (second base), Scott Woodward (third base), David Anderson (first base), Adam Rice (outfield) and Bobby Gagg and Austin Fleet (starting pitchers).
Benedict's Sunday game canceledBenedict was scheduled to play Bluefield State again on Sunday during its visit to Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Fla. Bluefield State's Web site reports the Sunday game has been postponed, although I suspect canceled is more correct.
