Riverside catchers in contention
The Greenville News reports former Riverside High star John Nester could be the starting catcher at Clemson this season. If Nester should win the job, and Kyle Enders holds off his challengers at USC, the state's two highest-profile programs could have catchers from the same high school.

  • Carson-Newman's S.C. connections
    A pair of players from South Carolina schools are playing for Carson-Newman, which opened its season by sweeping 3 games from Augusta State last weekend. Junior shortstop Mills Rogers, from Hillcrest High, went 5-for-15 in the opening series. Senior pitcher Corbin Ariail of Spring Valley started one game, allowing three runs in four innings. The Eagles have 11 games scheduled against S.C. schools this season.

    4 Upstate players have homecoming
    Bluefield (WV) State College, which plays a doubleheader at Limestone on Thursday, has four players from the Greenville-Spartanburg area on its roster: Mark Crossland, Michael Gillard, Todd Graham and Nate Ramsey.

    Southern Wesleyan has some promotions planned this weekend for its opening home games of the season.
