  • Alabama's Wells retires
In what seems to me to be an oddly timed move, longtime Alabama baseball coach Jim Wells retired effective Tuesday and will be replaced by assistant coach Mitch Gaspard. The Crimson Tide lost six of its last seven games, including two-and-outs in the SEC Tournament and NCAA Clemson Regional. While I'm sure the pressure on Wells was nothing like it is on Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban, some Bama fans were short on patience regarding Wells. I was in Pete's Famous Hot Dogs (worth the trip) in Birmingham the day after Bama's second loss in the SEC Tournament in nearby Hoover. One topic of conversation among the patrons and the owner was whether Wells would be fired after the SEC showing.

  • Vols release schedule
The University of Tennessee has posted its 2010 schedule. Included are a weekend visit to SEC East foe South Carolina March 19-21 and home games against USC Upstate (March 24) and Presbyterian (March 31) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Tennessee lists the Sunday game in the USC series as starting at 2 p.m., instead of the traditional 1:30 p.m. start. I wonder if that's an error, a change in time for that particular game for TV, or a new starting time for Sunday games.

  • Bradley honored
Baseball America has named USC rising sophomore Jackie Bradley Jr. as the No. 19 prospect in the Cape Cod League this summer. I am unable to offer a complete list of all rankings by the newspaper because I am not an insider subscriber to BA.
