Bobby Richardson talks World Series
Neil White of The State has written an article on Sumter native and former New York Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson. It's centered on his World Series exploits, but it also mentions his stint as USC's baseball coach in the 1970s. I was around Richardson a fair amount when covering USC around that time, including a trip to the 1975 College World Series (still the favorite event I've ever covered as a sportswriter, BTW). He was always just as nice as his public reputation indicates he is. One wonders why someone conned him into running for congress in 1976 and giving up the coaching job. Nice guys and congress don't go together.
