The Southern Collegiate Baseball League playoffs began today. I'm sorry I didn't get this posted earlier in the day, but I was working unusual hours at my regular job.
USC tops SEC ratings
Not surprisingly, College World Series champion South Carolina tops the season-ending SEC power ratings by Yahoo!Sports.com's Kendall Rogers. Clemson is ranked No. 3 in the ACC. Among teams not from the "Big Six" conferences, Coastal Carolina is No. 2, College of Charleston is No. 5 and The Citadel is No. 8.
Paladins' Smith an all-star
Furman's Nate Smith threw one inning in the Great Lakes League All-Star Game last week in his hometown of Cincinnati. Smith worked 30 2/3 innings for the Paladins as a freshman last season.
Gottlieb goes one inning
Furman's Kevin Gottlieb went one no-hit inning in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game in Queens, N.Y. last week. Gottlieb is a rising junior for the Paladins.
Marzilli selected
South Carolina's Evan Marzilli, who played his way into the everyday lineup in the postseason, was one of three Gamecocks named to the SEC's freshman academic honor roll. Also selected with Greg Harrison and Anthony Iacomini, neither of who played this season.
