Several players with state college ties ranked high in the Coastal Plain (summer) League statistics.
Winthrop's Chas Crane has had an outstanding season for the Peninsula Pilots, leading the league in six offensive categories (including 9 HRs and 48 RBIs) and was in the top five in five others. The Pilots played Forest City Tuesday night for the right to advance to the finals of the league playoffs.
Pitcher Colby Holmes of the Florence Redwolves and the University of South Carolina also posted some solid numbers, finishing second in the league in ERA and fourth in opponents' batting average.
Clemson pitcher-first baseman Will Lamb hit .396 in 12 games after joining Peninsula. He did not pitch.
Former USC Salkehatchie star Branfy Arias, now at Tusculum, stole a league-record 45 bases for the Columbia Blowfish.
Roth eschews pitching, too
USC College World Series pitching hero Michael Roth also passed on pitching this summer to work on his offense. The Riverside High product played with the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, batting .310 with 2 homers and 13 RBI in 17 games.
