Cuba advances to Championship Game
Cuba beat South Korea, 11-1, Thursday in the first semifinal game of the World University Championships in Tokyo. The Cubans advance to Saturday's championship game against the winner of the other semifinal between the United States and Japan, scheduled for approximately 5 a.m. (EDT) Thursday.

Beary plays in league title game
USC's Robert Beary will play for the Leesburg Lightning in Thursday's championship game of the Florida Collegiate Summer League at Tropicana Field, home of the MLB Tampa Bay Rays. Leesburg will play the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs in St. Petersburg. Beary is hitting .410 for Leesburg. Also on the Leesburg roster are USC Aiken's Jason Cochcroft (3-2, 3.73 ERA) and Winthrop's Robert Lake (2-3, 4.01). The Lightning are coached by former major leaguer Frank Viola, who expressed interest in the Winthrop coaching job eventually filled by Clemson assistant Tom Riginos.

    Fans on one Clemson message board wonder if Walhalla native and former Tiger Bradley LeCroy might be a candidate to replace Riginos as an assistant under Jack Leggett at Clemson. LeCroy is an assistant coach at Tennessee.

    Bo Doyle of the CoastalFans.com message board reports Jim Callis of Baseball America tweets that Coastal Carolina signee Joel Pierce, the seventh round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers, is preparing to attend Coastal instead of signing a pro contract. He's a right-handed pitcher.

    Right-handed relief pitcher Corey Carver is transferring to Francis Marion from Campbell for his senior season.
