Warner Fusselle, voice of Spartanburg Phillies pro baseball in the early 1970s, died Sunday night of an apparent heart attack.
Fusselle most recently was announcer for the Brooklyn Cyclones in the New York-Penn League.
His manager there was Rich Donnelly. In 1972, Donnelly was manager of the Greenville Rangers of the Western Carolinas (now Sally) League. The Rangers played that season in Meadowbrook Park even though the facility had burned down Feb. 14 of that season.
Fusselle shot some 8MM film of the park and later used that footage in a feature on ESPN.
Back when I was still working for The Greenville News, I talked to Fusselle in February for a story on the 40th anniversary of Meadowbrook burning down. He was kind enough to send a CD with the film.
