Powell's charity event Sunday

Landon Powell's third annual Donors on the Diamond Dinner is set for this Sunday (Oct. 21) at Fluor Field in Greenville.

The event, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.,  is used to promote awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation and is associated with DonateLifeSC.org.

Former major leaguer Tommy John is the scheduled guest speaker. Ray Tanner, Powell's baseball coach at South Carolina and currently the school's athletic director, and new Gamecocks coach Chad Holbrook are among the celebrities scheduled to attend the event. An auction of baseball memorabilia and other items will be held.

A youth clinic is to be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, with former Gamecocks and current pros Justin Smoak, Steven Tolleson and Scott Wingo and ex-Clemson star Brad Chalk among the scheduled instructors.

Powell, a major league player who lives in the Upstate, has an autoimmune issue and likely will need a liver transplant at some point.

Powell and his wife, Allyson, also are dealing with another issue.  Allyson gave birth to twins about a month ago and one has hemophagocytic syndrome, a genetic blood disorder. The infant is receiving treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She eventually will need a bone marrow transplant.

Personal note: After interviewing Landon and Allyson for a story prior to last year's event, I signed up to become an organ and tissue donor. You can, too, by clicking on the DonateLifeSC.org link above. You won't feel a thing during the donation/harvesting process. - Rudy
