Ex-Furman coach Dixie Howell dies

David "Dixie" Howell, former football assistant coach and head baseball coach at Furman, died Tuesday.

According to Furman Sports Information Director Hunter Reid, the Honea Path resident coached the baseball team from 1958-60. The 1960 team went 15-9-1, closing the season with two wins over Clemson. His three-year record was 30-33-1.

One of his baseball players at Furman was Tom Wall, who would later be the Paladins' head coach from 1974-93.

Howell's first game as Furman's coach also was the second game of legendary Clemson coach Bill Wilhelm's tenure.

A blog post from October reveals one of Howell's football players at Campbell High School in Georgia in the 1950s was Fred Herren, who went on to become head football coach at Newberry College.

The above photo of Howell is "borrowed" from that blog, which included a report on a visit earlier this year to Howell by Herren and several other former players.
