USC Upstate outfielder Gaither Bumgardner was the preseason selection for player of the year as part the Atlantic Sun Conference's coaches poll. Bumgardner and teammate Chad Sobotka, a pitcher, were voted to the preseason all-conference team. Florida Gulf Coast and Mercer finished in a tie for voting on the predicted conference order of finish. USC Upstate finished third in the poll. In a fan poll through Facebook, Florida Gulf Coast, Mercer and USC Upstate finished 1-2-3.
