News Digest, Jan. 22

Preseason practice begins Friday
Most NCAA Division I baseball teams will begin organized team work on Friday. I know Clemson and USC will, because I've seen press releases. I'm assuming other state schools will, too. USC has announced times for weekend scrimmages at Carolina Stadium: 3:30 p.m. Friday and 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. I'll share information from other schools as I get it.

Voorhees will have a team
Coach Robert Platts confirms Voorhees will have a team this year after not fielding a team last season. The Tigers open their season in a tournament at Florida Memorial University. They will play St. Thomas twice Feb. 2, then play host Florida Memorial Feb. 3.

FMU tournament gets sponsor
Carolinas Hospital System will be the title sponsor of the season-opening tournament at Francis Marion University Feb. 1-3 at Sparrow Stadium. This is the eighth consecutive year the Patriots have opened the season with the tournament. Belmont Abbey, Claflin and King are the other schools involved.
