News Digest, Jan. 27, Part 3

It ain't gonna happen
CollegeSportsMadness.com's preseason all-SEC team lists USC first baseman Christian Walker as a first-team selection.  The only problem with the Website's pick is Walker signed a pro contract after last season. Gamecocks pitcher Colby Holmes and outfielder Tanner English are second-team picks. English, an outfielder, is experimenting with switch-hitting. The speedster learned a cardinal rule of baseball - you can't steal first base - by striking out 71 times in 69 games as a freshman in 2012.

Schmidt acclaimed
Clemson pitcher Clate Schmidt is CollegeSportsMadness.com's selection to be ACC freshman of the year. Tigers infielder Steve Wilkerson is projected as a first-team all-ACC player.

Cougars selected
Matt Pegler and Monte Lee of College of Charleston are CollegeSportsMadness.com's picks for Southern Conference pitcher and coach of the year, respectively. Pegler is a Greenville County native. Joining Pegler as first-team preseason all-SoCon choices are teammates Bradley Goodson and Brandon Murray. Second-team choices include Austin Pritcher of The Citadel,  Brandon Glazer of The Citadel and Taylor Johnson of Furman.

Big South honors projected
CollegeSportsMadness.com projects Coastal Carolina's Aaron Burke to be pitcher of the year, Winthrop's Nick Bateman to be freshman of the year and former USC assistant Jim Toman of Liberty to be coach of the year in the Big South Conference.  Joining Burke as first-team all-Big South picks are teammates Tyler Herb and Ryan Connolly and Charleston Southern's Chase Shelton and Bobby Ison. Second-team picks are Presbyterian's Chandler Knox and Billy Motroni and Coastal's Alex Buccilli.

Bumgardner tabbed
USC Upstate's Gaither Bumgardner is predicted by CollegeSportsMadness.com to be the Atlantic Sun Conference player of the year. He is joined on the preseason first team all-Atlantic Sun team by teammate Chad Sobotka. The Rifles' David Roseboom, Luke Weber and Tyler Miller were second-team picks.

Clate Schmidt will NOT be ACC Freshman of the year either. More likely he will be fighting for innings in middle relief.
