Western Carolina is CollegeBaseballToday.com's pick to win the Southern Conference in 2013.  College of Charleston is picked fourth, Furman sixth, The Citadel ninth and Wofford 10th.

Gray Military has a coach
Gray Military Academy, which will field a post-high school level baseball team in 2014, has posted on its Website that it has selected a coach. An announcement is to come later.

Players commit
TheDiamondProspects.com reports the following player commitments:
* Laurence Manning sophomore catcher Todd Larrimer to Florence-Darlington Tech.
* Ridge View utility player Mitchell Price to USC Lancaster.

The site also reported West Florence RHP Akeem Bostick had committed to Spartanburg Methodist, but SCNow reported in November that he had signed with Georgia Southern. We'll see how things play out.

Winthrop has posted an update as it prepares for its Feb. 15 season opener against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

D1 schools will sometimes agree to let a kid make a dual commitment to the D1 and to a JUCO. This is usually done when the kid has not qualified academically, and is unlikely to do so in time to enroll at the D1 school. If he pulls a rabbit out the hat and manages to qualify, he will enroll at the D1. Otherwise he will end up at the JUCO. The dual commitment gives the kid some certainty that he will end up one of two places, and eliminates the scrambling around to find a JUCO when he finds out two weeks before school D1 classes start that he again did not get a high enough score on the SAT/ACT.
