Charleston Southern (22-30 overall, 11-11 Big South) - A 7-3 win
over South Division champ Coast Carolina clinched a tournament berth
for the Buccaneers. Either Gardner-Webb, Liberty or Presbyterian will be
the odd man out in the battle for a tournament berth.
Clemson (39-15, 18-10 ACC) - The Tigers' 8-2 victory over Florida
State moved them into a tie with the Seminoles for the lead in the ACC
Atlantic Division. One more win over the next two days will give Clemson
the edge over the Seminoles in the head-to-head tiebreaker. If it can
take care of business against FSU, Clemson needs Duke to beat N.C. State
once for the Tigers to be division champ.
Coastal Carolina (33-19, 16-6 Big South) - The Chanticleers can't
catch Campbell for the best record in the conference, so they'll have
to settle for the second seed in the conference tournament. The 7-3
loss to Charleston South will serve as a hit for Coastal's RPI. The
Chanticleers are probably in good shape for an at-large bid to the NCAA
Tournament right now, but another loss to the Buccaneers could be a
killer of Coastal doesn't win the Big South Tournament.
College of Charleston (29-24, 16-11 Southern) - The Cougars' 7-2
victory over Georgia Southern assured them of a no worse than fourth
place, but their chances at sharing took a hit when wen The Citadel beat
UNC Greensboro. If the College wins its next two games against Georgia
Southern, it will squeeze past Elon in the standings. The Cougars need
to have The Citadel lose twice to UNC Greensboro to slip into second
place.
Furman (30-23, 14-16 Southern) - Furman coasted past Dayton,
19-3, in non-conference play and clinched at least seventh place when
eighth-place Samford split a pair with Davidson. Furman can finish sixth
if Georgia Southern splits its final two games with College of
Charleston. The Paladins can take fifth with a Georgia Southern/CofC
split and a Western Carolina sweep of its final two games against
Appalachian State. The regular-season champ Catamounts won
Thursday's opener, 23-5, but it is a rivalry series so nothing's guaranteed the final two days.
Presbyterian (24-30, 10-12 Big South) - The Blue Hose hurt their
tournament chances with a 4-2 loss to Gardner-Webb. They can clinch a
spot by winning their final two games over the Bulldogs. A 1-1 finish
would leave the Blue Hose needing Radford to sweep Liberty and then have
the league's tiebreaker come into play. PC and Liberty did not meet in
the regular season.
South Carolina (38-15, 16-11 SEC) - The Gamecocks took a 4-1 lead
into the bottom of the eighth inning and allowed four runs to lose the
series opener, 5-4. USC still can earn the fourth seed for the SEC
Tournament - and a bye to avoid Tuesday's single-elimination round - by
winning one of the final two games (or if one game gets rained out).
Thursday's game had the feel of a similar late-inning loss at Florida.
The Gamecocks wound up being swept in that series. They can't afford to
let Thursday beat them two more times. losses by Mississippi and Alabama
knocked them too far to catch the Gamecocks in the overall standings.
USC is assured of finishing no worse than fifth. It could slip into
third with two wins and a pair of Arkansas losses to Auburn.
The Citadel (32-22, 18-10 Southern) - The Bulldogs beat UNC
Greensboro, 12-2 to improve their chances of finishing second. One more
win over UNCG will assure them of doing that. If the Bulldogs lose two
to the Spartans, they could finish as low as fourth.
USC Upstate (25-27, 8-17 Atlantic Sun) - The Spartans lost to
North Florida, 15-5 and stayed in an eighth-place tie with Jacksonville.
However, Jacksonville has the head-to-head tiebreaker. USC Upstate must
win one more game than the Dolphins do over the next two days to earn a
tournament spot.
Winthrop (20-33, 7-15 Big South) - The Eagles saw their slim hopes of slipping into the conference tournament ended with a 7-3 loss at UNC Asheville.
Wofford (20-34, 10-20 Southern) - The Terriers were idle Thursday
and have completed conference play. If they want to go to the league
tournament, they'll have to buy a ticket.
