WHAT DID FRDAY'S RESULTS MEAN FOR STATE DI TEAMS?

Charleston Southern (22-31 overall, 11-12 Big South) -  The Buccaneers lost to South Division champ Coastal Carolina, 6-2. Coupled with Gardner-Webb's sweep of Presbyterian, that means CSU could finish sixth, seventh or eighth in the league standings. A Buccaneers win Saturday and a Liberty loss to Radford could create a tie with Longwood for the final three tournament berths.

Clemson (39-16, 18-11 ACC) - The ACC Atlantic race is so tight that the Tigers went from a first-place tie to third place after a 2-1 loss to Florida State. Two things must happen for Clemson to win the division and one of the two top seeds for the ACC Tournament: 1. They must beat Florida State on Saturday and 2. N.C. State must lose to Duke. .The Wolfpack trailed most of Friday's game before rallying to win, 7-6, in 10 innings. Clemson may currently sit in fifth place in the ACC's pecking order to be a regional host. A win over FSU Saturday and a good showing in the ACC Tournament could help the Tigers move up that list. The selection committee seems to reward teams playing well at the end of the season, and despite Friday's result, the Tigers are playing as well as they have all season. If they should pull off a division title, the Tigers may be tough to bypass  for a host role. I'm don't think even a win over FSU and an unbeaten run through the ACC Tournament would be enough for Clemson to get a Top 8  national seed.

Coastal Carolina (34-19, 17-6 Big South) - The Chanticleers restored order in the South Division with the 6-2 victory over the Buccaneers. Despite some good out-of-conference RPI games, being swept by CSU might have been a killer  for the Chanticleers at-large hopes if they don't win the Big South Tournament. They can polish their resume a little more with a win on Saturday.

College of Charleston (30-24, 17-11 Southern) - The Cougars' got a 3-2 walk-off victory over a struggling Georgia Southern team which has lost six straight games and six of its last seven in SoCon play, CofC does have a carrot to motivate them toward a sweep. Another win over Georgia Southern on Saturday moves the College into third place in the league standings. A win and a Citadel loss to UNC Greensboro would give the Cougars second place in the league.

Furman (31-23, 14-16 Southern) - While the Paladins were dispatching non-conference foe Dayton, 5-2, the stars were aligning for the Paladins to finish fifth in the SoCon standings. Furman will finish fifth in the SoCon if Western Carolina beats Appalachian State on Saturday - or if the game gets canceled by rain. The Paladins will finish ahead of Georgia Southern based on the head-to-head tiebreaker. - meaning they'll be no worse that sixth.

Presbyterian (24-32, 10-14 Big South) - Suffering 12-7 and 8-5 losses to Gardner-Webb completed the regular season for the Blue Hose. They needed a Friday sweep to have much of a chance of qualifying for the Big South Tournament.

South Carolina (39-15, 17-11 SEC) - The Gamecocks needed some late magic to beat Mississippi State and clinch fourth place in the overall league standings.  Grayson Greiner hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning to produce a 5-3 victory. That means USC will escape Tuesday's single-elimination play-in round and be assured of two games in Hoover. Getting swept by Mississippi State would have put the Gamecocks in danger of going one-and-done in the SEC Tournament. That likely would have quashed any hopes the Gamecocks had of being a regional host.. The Gamecocks play in the last of four Wednesday games at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium - the facility's name reverted after a new Regions Bank Park was built in downtown Birmingham. Their opponent will be the winner of a single-elimination game between the fifth seed (either Alabama, Florida, Mississippi or Mississippi State) and 12th seed (Kentucky or Missouri). Kentucky must beat Missouri Saturday to avoid the 12th spot. A Missouri win or a rainout would leave the Wildcats 12th. USC's Saturday's game against Mississippi State could determine which of the near-even teams gets the edge to be a fourth regional host from the SEC - unless said winner lays an egg in Hoover.

The Citadel (32-23, 18-11 Southern) - The Bulldogs could have clinched second place in the SoCon with a victory. Instead. UNC Greensboro kept the tension alive with a ninth-inning rally for a 13-11 walk-off victory. Another loss today would drop the Bulldogs into third in the conference. A Citadel loss and a College of Charleston win would drop the Bulldogs to fourth and a possible second-round tournament game against red-hot regular-season champ Western Carolina.

USC Upstate (25-28, 8-18 Atlantic Sun) - The Spartans' have three paths to an A-Sun Tournament bid after Friday's 6-2 loss to North Florida. 1. They must beat North Florida and Jacksonville must lose to East Tennessee State. 2., They must win and have Jacksonville get rained out or, 3.. They must get rained out have Jacksonville lose. It's not exactly Spahn and Sain and pray for rain, but any inclement weather could server to to help the Spartans.

Winthrop (21-33, 8-15 Big South) - The Eagles are playing out the string, but were motivated enough to beat UNC Asheville, 3-2, in 12 innings on Friday. Another win over UNCA on Saturday would give the Eagles a .400 winning percentage. Twenty-two wins would be an increase of five over last season.

Wofford (20-35, 10-20 Southern) - The most positive thing to come about for the Terriers Friday was they scored the final seven runs in a 13-10 loss to Old Dominion. That made the loss look more respectable.
