News digest, April 29, part 2

NAIA tournaments begin
A pair of NAIA conference tournaments with S.C. member schools begin Wednesday.

* The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament begins at J.P. Small Memorial Stadium in Jacksonville. Voorhees plays regular-season champion Talladega at 12:30 p.m. Edward Waters and Tougaloo play later in the day. I've made several attempts to contact conference officials, but that's all I've been able to find out.

* The Southern States Athletic Conference  begins at Paterson Field in Montgomery. Southern Wesleyan, the only Palmetto State team in the league, did not qualify for the eight-team, double-elimination event. The Warriors move to NCAA Division II and membership in Conference Carolinas beginning next season.

* Another NAIA league, the Sun Conference, begins its tournament on Friday at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla. USC Beaufort, the only S.C. school in the conference, did not qualify for the six-team, double-elimination event.
