Big South gets washed out with nary a drop from the sky

Someone affiliated with a Big South Conference team took
these pictures of the soggy field at Winthrop and shared
them with Brian Foley of CollegeBaseballDaily.com.

Folks operating college baseball tournaments have enough to worry about with deliberately paced games games and weather wrecking the schedule without the added headache of man-made disasters.

But the Big South Conference had four games washed out Wednesday without a drop of rain.

Some kind of mishap or malfunction regarding the sprinkler system left the field at The Winthrop Ballpark on Rock Hill in unplayable condition. It's something right out of Bull Durham.

At first, officials pushed two of Wednesday's scheduled games back to Thursday and moved the start of the scheduled first game from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. so work could be done on the field. Then, moments before 2, the entire Wednesday schedule was postponed until Thursday.

Friend and colleague Brian Foley of CollegeBaseballDaily.com shared the two photos above with me.
